Marta De Pascalis - Alexandria

from Mutatis Mutandis by The Eternal Chord

about

Modus operandi: I have sampled a piece of the chosen track and i passed into a Reaktor ensemble which is a sampler and sound generator, and allows me to achieve very interesting results in terms of sound design. I find it very interesting and powerful as an instrument - you can end very far from the point where you started, and i thought it could be a smart way to rework a piece.

The sound that came out of it made me somehow think about an ancient Mediterranean atmosphere, and combining this suggestion with those provoked by the original piece, which is pure live organ beauty and power, I started to fantasise between the two things, and making some research I found out connection; the first organ was invented by Ctesibius in Alexandria around 250BCE! And Alexandria is a city in Egypt, founded by Alexander the Great, on the Mediterranean Sea. Historians say that it was a wonderful city, full of incredible buildings and magnificent gardens, second in its power only to Rome… so the organ was invented by someone living in a kind of place I was dreaming about while listening the music I created starting from sampling an organ sound... fantastic!

Coming back from dreaming …I think that re-working means simply re-interpreting something with your own language. This process can be developed in very different ways, applying disparate techniques, as the pleasure of the artist suggests. In my case this happened by starting from a basis and using it as a launching pad to depart for other destinations, starting with someone's words to end up talking about my inner feelings.
