Olivia Block - Flue

about

For me, this project was not so much about remixing a recorded composition, as with a typical “remix” project, but about using electronic technology to explore the timbral, textural, and dynamic properties of the pipe organ played in the composition.

The recording was really rich source material because of the harmonies in the piece and the length of the tones. Through filters and other processing techniques, the remarkable capabilities of the pipe organ can be enhanced and emphasized through those chords.

The physical properties and materials of the cathedral inextricably linked to the organ sound, which, for me, was another aspect to play with, because the spacial qualities were captured in the recording.

I am fascinated with pipe organs, how each one is unique, and how the physical properties of the space are "performed.” These considerations went in to my decisions about how to use the source material.
