about

Processed and recorded onto cassette tape by Faith Coloccia. Engineered by Randall Dunn 2018. Vashon/Seattle WA.USA.

To me, a remix is a leap of trust. The person asking for the remix is entrusting you with something they've made and like. It's also a compliment to the person being asked. It means the person looking for a remix thinks you could make something new and interesting out of their material.

To speak of my process of remixing your music, I will first speak about field recording onto cassette. I started recording onto cassette as a teenager in the 1990s, which was a limited technology I used out of necessity, accessibility and limited means. It has since become part of my creative process and integrated into my work. I treat the field recordings I make as instruments themselves, and the artifacts of the hand-held cassette drop-out/static etc. as compositional tools.

I approached your compositions as I would field recordings by re-recording them onto cassettes in an echoey room. I see the source material as the instrument. Much like how the church space must be "played" when you play the pipe organ, I tried to "play" your recorded compositions. I am very interested in finding out the "primal matter" or the "bones" of sounds and ideas, and how they are translated through accessible tools. How can I change the dimension of an already beautiful sound, or bring a new life into a signal? I see re-mixing (when its good!) as a form of transmigration of one person's expression of their inner world into another's expression of their inner world.
